First built in 1858, the Ceylon Government Railway system enabled people to venture into the previously difficult to reach outposts in remote Ceylon. The extensive railway system enabled plantations to transport their goods to Colombo, the capitol and main port. CGR held annual poster contests to choose the best designs which would then be displayed at every train station in the island. This iconic poster was done by G. S. Fernando, one of Ceylon’s foremost watercolorists.
